#CienciaenelParlamento: Bringing Science and Politics Together

The University of La Laguna, the CSIC and the Association #CienciaenelParlamento organize the discussion table "Role of scientific and technological advice in public decision making". The round table, which will take place in the Salón de Grados of the Guajara Campus next Friday, October 11, at 16:00 hours, will bring together national deputies from the main parties to discuss how scientific knowledge can help them in decision-making.

Modern societies face major social challenges such as ageing, the search for alternative energies, the development of sustainable cities and communities and migratory crises, among others. For all of them, scientific knowledge could provide a series of data and scientific evidence with which to offer more information to our political representatives to weigh the best line of action that interests the majority of the population.

Precisely, the initiative #Science in Parliament was born in social networks at the beginning of 2018 to bring this scientific knowledge closer to public policies in the heart of popular sovereignty: the Congress of Deputies. In a few months, it gained the support of more than 3,000 people and 200 institutions and, on November 6 and 7, organized in the same Congress of Deputies a conference where more than 200 scientists and almost 100 parliamentarians debated on 12 topics of social and political interest such as antimicrobial resistance, artificial intelligence and big data, climate change or migration, refugees and social inclusion.

At the beginning of this year and thanks to the work carried out by #Ciencia in Parliament, the Congress of Deputies approved the constitution of an office of parliamentary scientific advice whose mission was the elaboration of scientific evidence reports and the organization of interaction meetings between science and politics.

This informative day aims to cover the work done by #Science in Parliament and to generate a debate between the political, academic and business spheres, to share ideas on the role of scientific knowledge as a means to increase the freedom, critical spirit and well-being of citizens.
