The president of the CSIC visits the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA)

Rosa Menéndez praised the high-level research work done at the centre located on the island of Tenerife and insisted on the need to boost investment in science. On Tuesday 9 April, the president of the National Research Council (CSIC), Rosa Menéndez, visited the facilities of the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA), located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

The president of the CSIC toured the laboratories of the Council's only centre in the Canary Islands and met with the staff and board of directors. Rosa Menéndez emphasized the value of consolidating the investment and improvement work carried out in recent years in the research field at a national level and pointed out the pivotal need to provide the CSIC centres, such as the IPNA, with the necessary tools to promote the multidisciplinary nature that characterizes the centres belonging to this public institution.

The president of the CSIC was left "impressed by the vibrancy of the centre" specialised in research on natural products, natural and chemical sciences and agricultural sciences, and congratulated the staff of the IPNA-CSIC for the high scientific productivity achieved in recent years.

The researchers shared with the president the latest developments regarding the different lines of research in which the Institute's groups are currently working, such as the control of invasive species - a vital aspect for the biodiversity of the Canary Islands - the development of new compounds and pharmaceuticals from natural products and the leading role of the Canary Islands as a space for volcanological research worldwide. In her meeting with the IPNA staff, the President also stated her willingness to provide the technical staff of research centres with greater job stability and insisted on the need to establish collaborations between researchers, companies and other areas of society as a fundamental vehicle for the advancement of science in Spain.
