Life and Earth Sciences
The Department of Life and Earth Sciences is divided in six research groups: Agrobiotechnology, Atmosphere, Aerosols and Climate, Biotechnology of Macromolecules, Social Sciences, Heritage and Food, Island Ecology and Evolution and Volcanology.
Research within the Agrobiotechnology Group is focussed on the study of innate plant defences, soil fertility and plant nutrition, and the development of new biotechnological tools for crop improvement.
The group Biotechnology of Macromolecules focuses on combating the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance through the development of macromolecules with therapeutic, cosmetic, agricultural and phytosanitary applications, approaching the problem from a One Health perspective.
The Island Ecology and Evolution Research Group is comprised of ecologists and evolutionary biologists with diverse interests that range from understanding individual species ecology and conservation needs, through to system-level investigation of interactions among species and the processes that regulate spatial patterns of biodiversity.
Research within the Volcanology Group is broad ranging, extending from the development and application of instrumentation for volcanic monitoring through to the investigation of the volcanic history of the Canarian Archipelago.
